Wedding day: 3 tips to better pre-wedding photos

Your must-be-done list for your wedding day will probably look something like that: hair make up dress flowers etc These are super important but I bet your photographer will be with you, photographing you, hours before the ceremony, hours before your hair is done and your make up is applied.  So how will you be looking in those pre-ceremony photographs?  Here are 3 tips to help you with making sure that you look your best in those photos too. 1. The room where you are getting ready. Make sure you pick a room that is spacious and has good lighting.  Small, dark rooms are difficult to more around in, the lighting is poor and it will be more difficult for your photographer to take great shots of you getting ready. Also look for things like the colours on the walls.  You may have spent ages deciding on your colour scheme for your wedding so you don’t want to get ready in a room with walls that clash with your chosen colours.  You may think I am pushing it …

I want to say ‘thank you’

I have noticed something when I photograph weddings and every time it happens, and every time it fills my heart with happiness and warmth. At every single wedding I have photographed there has been at least one person, usually more than one, who goes out of their way to help me, the photographer.  They help in many different ways: making sure I am fed and that I have plenty to drink, helping me with the dress and shoes to be photographed, helping with carrying things, remembering things, having a chat with me or even just a kind word, all sorts of little things that help immensely and make my day enjoyable and smoother. Sometimes it’s a mum, sometimes it’s the MC, sometimes it’s a child, and it’s always a bridesmaid.  Or two. So I wanted to say a big thank you to you, you have probably recognised yourself, you were one of them.  THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.  You made such a big difference 🙂 xxx

pace yourself on your wedding day

Wedding tip: pacing yourself on your wedding day

Your wedding day is such a fun, special, beautiful day.  Once in a lifetime, something you will always remember, the day you marry the man or the woman of your dreams. But there’s something I have learned from photographing weddings: it is a long day, there are a lot of things to tick off as you go, a lot of things to remember, plenty of people to talk to, lots of walking, talking, laughing.  It’s fun…and it’s tiring too.  It’s a long day for a photographer and it is a long day for you too. So you need to be prepared, physically, mentally, so that you can last the whole day without it becoming an exhausting marathon.  Here are a few tips to help you: * don’t forget to eat something before the ceremony (and after) * drink plenty of water * remember to take little breaks and breathe * bring a spare set of comfortable shoes for when you have your photos taken after the ceremony.  You may have to walk some distance to …

Wedding tips: learn how to pose for beautiful wedding photographs (part 1)

I spent three days at my gorgeous friend Zoe’s place two weekends ago on my way to Auckland to photograph a beautiful wedding.   A couple of days before the wedding, I had bought super talented photographer Cat Hepple’s book on posing people because so many couples I meet tell me they do not like posing in front of the camera and yet they do not know what to do if they are not directed into a pose. Posing.  How can we help you, dear brides and grooms, with this difficult part of your beautiful day?  Keep reading, the answer is in this post. When we are together, Zoe and I can’t help ourselves, we have to do a photo shoot of some sort.  Often, it is little Stella who plays our model and somewhat she always nails it, she has no problem whatsoever being in front of the camera. This got me thinking…. Kids are comfortable with themselves in front of the camera and us adults seem to have lost this ability.  All of us?  I wanted …

wedding couple relaxed

Wedding tip: Is the most famous photographer best for you?

I have been wondering why many people make the decision to book a photographer for their wedding based on the popularity of this photographer, or because their best friend, friend, or friend of a friend recommended them?  Why do we feel safer in our choice when somebody else is making the decision for us? There is a variety of photographers out there and that’s a good thing: because there is a huge variety of us and we all like different things, styles (and people). This means that when it comes to your wedding, it is worth making sure that you choose a photographer because: a – you like their work b – you know you will feel comfortable with them following you for hours and hours while taking pictures of you on your one of the biggest day of your life c – they are kind, patient and will naturally make you feel relaxed. These are only examples.  There are many many reasons why you may choose one photographer instead of another one.  And these aren’t usually based on how much they charge. So I think at …

morning of wedding

wedding tips: what happens the morning of your wedding day?

Getting married soon or dreaming of your big day?…  Are you trying to picture what the morning before the ceremony is going to be like? Will the beautiful dresses hang from the tall window waiting for you to put it on? Will you and your bridesmaids be getting your make up done in a grand room overlooking some amazing gardens, champagne glasses in hand? Where will you have your hair done? Will it be stressful or just plain fun and exciting? Will your parents come and hug you at the last minute with tears in their eyes? What will it be like?… To help you visualise what takes place before you put your beautiful gown on and walk down the aisle, I have compiled a series of photos to give you an idea of what happens. You see, nothing to worry about, it always goes smoothly (with some hiccups, but mainly smoothly!) in a usually serene and loving atmosphere.  It’s a beautiful moment, the last one before you are married to this wonderful man, so go with the flow …
